1859 - ‘The Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection’ by Charles Darwin published

After returning from his voyage on HMS Beagle 23 years previously Charles Darwin publishes ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life’. This is by far one of the most influential scientific books to date lying the groundwork for evolution, modern botany, cellular biology and genetics. He held off publishing for many years fearing the fate of other radical scientists such as Copernicus and Galileo. The book however sold out in a matter of days.
