1984 - First animal to human transplant

Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, Stephanie Fae Beauclair, known as Baby Fae, undergoes surgery to replace her heart with that of a baboon's. It is the first example of xenotransplantation and was deemed a success, despite Baby Fae dying only 21 days later. To this day the event is considered one of the most controversial and important cases in medical ethics.
