Toes, like fingers, have lots of nerve endings so they can sense the texture of the ground underfoot and maintain balance. They are also at the end of a long and heavy pendulum – your leg. So when they strike something, they strike it fast and hard and there are lots of pain receptors anxious to remind you to be more careful next time.
