PlayStation VR gets 8 new games to wrap your head around

Excited about virtual reality gaming yet? If not you should be, because these new games announced by Sony for the PlayStation VR look pretty mind-blowing.

Sony has been teasing us with virtual reality for a while now, but since Project Morpheus officially became PlayStation VR we’ve been itching to strap black-and-white boxes to our heads and immerse ourselves into the weird and wonderful world it has to offer. And if the teaser trailers seen at their annual PlayStation Experience event in San Francisco this weekend are anything to go by, things just got truly but brilliantly bizarre.

We’ll have to get our hands (or heads) on them to find out how many of these games will go on to be timeless classics and how many eminently forgettable, but here are our thoughts on the latest PlayStation VR games:

REZ Infinite

An updated version of the Dreamcast classic, REZ Infinite looks completely bonkers, but probably exactly the sort of game you want to play in virtual reality. Like its predecessor, this is an on-rails shooter conveniently set in a VR world, and although strapping on a PlayStation VR will probably be enough to negate the need for a Trance Vibrator, covering yourself in glowing disco lights like in the video is highly recommended (at least in our opinion).

Ace Combat 7

We grew up playing the classic arcade gameAfter Burner, so it’s about time we got to wear a real helmet when flying around dogfighting and pretending to be Maverick. Sadly this trailer is a bit more of a Goose, but we’re still excited.

Eagle Flight

Imagine the beautiful French capital Paris devoid of tourists and replete with deer and giraffes – oh, and you’re an eagle. That is about what we can gleam from the Eagle Flight trailer, but we’re okay with that because it looks lush.

Golem

Alas, this isn’t the Lord of the Rings tie-in we hoped it would be, seemingly taking its inspiration from the tale of the Prague Golem, a stone creature controlled by his master to defend his people. The trailer has a clever twist though; it looks as though the Golem is out to cause harm and destruction (much like in the Czech tale), before things get very meta. Best watch, and let us know what you think.

Job Simulator

Eat doughnuts, drink coffee, photocopy staplers – nope, we have no idea why we would want to do that in VR either…

100ft Robot Golf

Pacific Rim-meets-Tiger Woods-meets-Street Fighter. We’re not sure if Sony is running out of ideas already but with this and Job Simulator in the launch lineup we’re beginning to have our doubts about VR gaming.

The Modern Zombie Taxi Co.

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous now…

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin

Finally, we’re back on track with a game we can get excited about, albeit without much to actually look at yet. Hot on the heels of the announcement that there would be a sequel to the excellent Psychonauts, developers Double Fine have released this trailer, which revels nothing more than the game’s very existence.

So what do you think about the latest selection of games for PlayStation VR? Are you excited about getting one?
