How are cranes assembled?

Asked by: Kirsty McGeorge, Cheltenham

Tower cranes like the ones you see on large building sites with horizontal jibs (arms) are erected section by section. The jib is assembled on top of the first element of the tower. An arrangement of jacks then raises the first section and another is inserted in its place. Gradually, piece by piece, the crane gets taller until it reaches the required height.
