Why are bees in decline?

Love honey? You better hope bees aren’t buzzing off anytime soon then.

It’s a combination of several different factors. Honeybees are vulnerable to the Varroa destructor mite that was introduced accidentally from Southeast Asia. There is also evidence that many pesticides, particularly the neonicotinoid class of chemicals, can weaken bees’ immune systems. This makes them more vulnerable to bacteria, fungi and viruses.
