Although Sony have been the last of the big three to announce the launch date and price of their VR headsets, PlayStation owners will no doubt be squealing with joy this morning safe in the knowledge that theirs will be cheaper than the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

The Japanese console giants made the announcement that the PlayStation VR will cost $399 (£350 in the UK) during the San Francisco Games Developers Conference and that it will be released in October this year, later than previous first half of 2016 promise.

They also announced that there will be around 50 virtual reality games available between launch and the end of the year, and the headset will ship with Playroom VR, which comes bundled with six free games. These can be enjoyed with friends and family, perhaps suggesting some social/multiplayer element to the device.

Given Sony has sold more than 30 million PS4s since launch it shouldn’t be an issue getting the PlayStation VR onto the heads of gamers across the globe. It could also be their trump card over the pricier Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which will retail at ~£500 and £689 respectively, and that’s before you factor in the hardcore computer systems required to run them.

It looks like the world of VR gaming is virtually upon us…
