This, dear reader, is affectionately known as a flying spaghetti monster (despite being unable to fly nor made of spaghetti), and was recently spotted of the coast of Angola.
Still unsure of what it is? Well that is exactly what the team from BP, who were roving around the bottom of the ocean using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), thought when they captured this video and gave it that rather misleading moniker (in honour of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, apparently).
Rather than let sleeping noodles lie, they sent the video to SERPENT, an organisation who research the deep sea environment using ROVs, where Dr Philip Pugh correctly identified it as a Bathyphysa conifera.
Still no idea what one of those is? Well, without going too far into the taxonomy of the animal kingdom it’s a Siphonophore, which means it is not actually a single creature, but a colony of individual animal grouped together that grow through cloning. The upshot of this is that they can grow to be one of the longest creatures on earth.
Now that we’ve cleared this matter up, who wants some carbonara?
