Do 'battery eaters' make batteries more environmentally friendly to dispose of?

Battery eaters are used to drain the energy from unwanted batteries.

Asked by: Jenny Bremner, Torrington

The battery eater is a circuit board shaped like a face. Its mouth is a slot for an AA battery and it has two LEDs for eyes. Insert dying batteries and enjoy the evil looking glow of the red eyes until the cell finally gives out.

The dead battery is no less environmentally damaging to dispose of but at least the device uses up all the energy.
