Do we still need car keys?

It’s good news if you’re constantly losing your keys in weird places.

Not really. In fact, Volvo plans to completely do away with physical keys by 2017, replacing them with an encrypted phone app that will talk to your car via Bluetooth. Jaguar has a similar system that works with an Android Wear watch.

This is different to the ‘keyless’ entry and start systems available on cars now, which still require you to carry a traditional fob, even if you don’t actually have to press a button or insert it into a lock or ignition barrel.
