Why are dragonflies attracted to my car's radio aerial?

Spot a dragonfly on your car aerial? They're probably on the hunt.

They have probably picked out your aerial because of its brightness. Dragonflies are hunters, and the two types that hunt near the ground or over water (the 'skimmers' and 'chasers') wait on a perch until they spot their prey, and return to the same perch to eat it. They tend to select bright, light objects as perches, probably because such objects are more easily picked out from a distance.
