Put it this way, a research grant proposal to investigate the possibilities of an afterlife would be unlikely to gain funding from any of the scientific research councils. This is not to deny the possibility of an afterlife, but science is concerned with testing hypotheses against things that can be observed and measured. And scientists have never found anything about a postulated afterlife that can be acceptably observed or measured. As a result, no funding, hence no research.
