DIY on Mars and amazing ice caves: 24 fantastic Images of the Month August 2021

The greatest science images from around the world for August.

Published: August 27, 2021 at 8:24 am

While a lot of the world still struggles to cope with the continued effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries have also been devastated by wildfires, floods and volcanoes, just as the IPCC released its latest reportinto the global impact of climate change.

However, it's not all bad news. There is still plenty or innovation going on around the world, with rubbish being used to make public benches, further scientific discoveries on Mars, and many efforts being made to combat climate change.

So take a look through the good, the bad, and the ugly in our round-up of science images for August 2021.

Mint glacier

On 19 August 2021, ESA astronaut, Luca Parmitano, and the head of the ESA Climate Office, Susanne Mecklenburg, explored some ice caves at the Gorner Glacier in Switzerland. They are part of an ESA-led expedition to observe the retreat and status of the glacier. The Gorner Glacier is the second biggest ice mass in the Alps. Situated in Switzerland near the Monte Rosa massif close to Zermatt and its mythic Matterhorn, it is one of the most extensively studied glacier in the world. The “Inside the Glacier” project has been monitoring Gorner since 1999 with a specific focus on the study of underground drainage and the application of novel technologies for the estimation of mass loss.
